It was just him in a room playing by himself. It encapsulates so many different sounds and styles of Rush. Nick: "What an amazing song! It's the epic of the record in many, many ways. And then it just falls back into that beautiful, climbing arpeggio. There's also that blues section in the middle, which comes out of nowhere, but it really emphasizes the lyric. And the pre-verse sections are so dreamy they take you to another place. I love the strumming in the verses it's so energetic. Clockwork AngelsĪlex: "I was just messing around at home and came up with a pretty lengthy piece, and most of it's what Clockwork Angels turned out to be. There's probably six guitar tracks in all. For guitars, I used a '59 Les Paul and a Tele, and it's one of the songs where I layered them. The chorus is very energetic, and the sentiment of the lyrics really sets it up for what's coming. It's huge in the old Zep way - it's got that big, blues-oriented riff. It's dark and a little out of character for Rush."Īlex: "I love BU2B for its heaviness. We put those through a Marshall and a Bogner." BU2B "For Alex's guitar tracks, we used his Les Paul Goldtop and his tobacco sunburst 335. When you've got that, you're off, you're flying! Like it is with so many Rush songs, it's all about the energy of Alex, Geddy and Neil playing together. Nick: "This might have been the first song that I heard. Did you rerecord it?' The shift of the emphasis on different instruments creates that." It's funny - people say to me, 'I hear new parts in the song. We did think that it could use a remix so it could connect more to what the album is now. "We talked about rerecording it, but there wasn't much point - we were happy with the performances and the sound. It was nice to revisit the track and remix it for the album with fresh ears. I like it because it's got a great riff and some quirky keyboard stuff. We played it on tour, and it grew throughout the process. CaravanĪlex: "This song was written quite some time ago it's been a couple years now. I'm happy to say that it really did come out the way we anticipated and hoped for." So how did Alex and Nick put it all together? We find out. "We wanted something that was bold and stripped down," says Alex Lifeson, "real in-your-face and very much the sound of a three-piece - a hard rock record in the classic sense. But man Clockwork Angels and A Matter of Life and Death were the ultimate "we do whatever we want" tours.Track By Track: Rush Clockwork Angels Alex Lifeson And Producer Nick Raskulinecz Talk Us Through The Inner Workings Of Rush's Latest Triumph By Joe Bosso, Total Guitar, August 2012, transcribed by pwrwindows The only other band that compares was Iron Maiden for their A Matter of Life and Death tour (I was lucky enough to see that one opening night too) on which they played all of their new album straight through. Only one song from 1970s (and not played until end of second set) and it wasn't 2112 (though they rotated that in at other shows on the tour).9 new songs in a row (10 played that tour). No songs in first set older than Signals (and most from much later) with deep cuts like Where's My Thing.Focus on less-well received (especially live) synth period with 4 songs from Power Windows including Grand Designs and Territories! (and Middletown Dreams at later shows).I think this was their most impressive concert: Was also lucky enough to see them opening night of the Clockwork Angels tour. I posted this in another thread, but it's worth repeating: Seven Cities of Gold, Caravan, and Carnies are strong tracks too. Headlong Flight, the title track, and The Anarchist are as good as just about anything else Rush has done (well, La Villa Strangiato is in a class by itself). It's Tier 1 Rush along with Power Windows and Moving Pictures. When Clockwork Angels came out my jaw dropped. No posts offering an item in exchange for money.
